Believe in Love is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her current stage name 'MARINA'. Appearing on her fourth studio album, LOVE + FEAR, it is the 9th track on the album.

It was written by Marina and Oscar Görres, who also produced the song.

Believe in Love is a 'FEAR' track.

Background[]

The song was written in May 2018, in Sweden,[1] along with True, Orange Trees and Enjoy Your Life. However, at this point, Marina thought the album had already been finished.[2]

On April 23, 2019, during a YouTube Q&A in promotion of LOVE + FEAR, Marina shared a snippet of the track ahead of its release.[3]

Meaning[]

Believe in Love is about insecurity in Love,[4] in her track-by-track interview for Apple Music, Marina said:[5]

FEAR is a lot more uptempo than LOVE. It's also a lot darker, electronically. I went with this song first because for me there was so much fear attached to being in love. And I think when you really meet someone who's special or right for you, you have to deal with all those things from your past and not ignore them. I wanted to open with this to link love to the fear you have within relationships.

She told Nylon:[6]

I think when you love someone really hard, any kind of attachment fears you've had in the past really come to the surface, and you have to deal with them. [The person you're dating] can only help you so much—you've got to do the work.

All I can say is, it definitely gets better. [These fears don't] go away completely, but—I mean, compared to two years ago, I'm so much more stable.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
You say that I'm different to the girls you dated
You say that you found me, I'm the one you waited for (On and on)
Guess I need to trust you when you say you love me
Every day you say that you've been thinkin' of me, on (On and on)

[Pre-Chorus]
And my mood, it changes all the time
I smile with tears in my eyes
But I can't be actin' like this
Doubtin' you for the rest of my life

[Chorus]
Ooh, I need to believe in love
Why is what you give never enough?
Losin' you is what I'm afraid of
I need to believe, believe in love

[Verse 2]
Stuck on fast forward, always on the rewind
I don't trust my head, no, I don't trust my damn mind (No, no more)
Try delete my memories, throw away the blueprint
Looking for a remedy, want it to be different from (From now on)

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause my mood, it changes all the time
I smile with tears in my eyes
But I can't be actin' like this
Doubtin' you for the rest of my life

[Chorus]
I need to believe in love
Why is what you give never enough?
Losin' you is what I'm afraid of
I need to believe, believe in love

[Bridge]
Don't wanna look back when I'm older on what didn't happen
Let go of my thoughts, let 'em fly away, swear I'll be better
Shouldn't take fear so seriously
Mmm, seriously

[Chorus]
I need to believe in love
Why is what you give never enough?
Losin' you is what I'm afraid of
I need to believe, believe in love

[Outro]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
