The song was written with Rick Nowels[1] on June 5, 2011, in Santa Monica, California. It was inspired by the 2003 book "Bubblegum: The History of Plastic Pop" by Nick Brownlee.[1] Its verses took ten minutes to write, though they were collected over a period of three months.[2] Rick Nowels reflected back on the writing process in 2021:[3]

We were in the kitchen having lunch. Somehow the subject of bubblegum came up. We decided we had to write a song called “Bubblegum Bitch" To me this is high art.

On June 21, Marina tweeted:[4] 'Electra Heart' ... is a Bubblegum Bitch.

Speaking about the song in a promotional track-by-track interview, she said it was "maybe" her favourite track off Electra Heart, describing it as a "fun, sassy song" that was very satisfying to write.[2] Later saying it was in a trio of songs, along with Homewrecker and Primadonna, that were about being the "aggressor" and the "slayer instead of the slain."[2]

Potential Single[]

In June 2012 in an interview Marina expressed a desire to make the song a single but said:[5]

"I have a song called 'Bubblegum *beep*'" she hinted, acknowledging radio constraints. "In Europe, when I go on promo there, they're like 'Are you making 'Bubblegum *beep*' a single? Because it's amazing' and they'll play it but in the UK you can't play '*beep*'. Some songs sound like singles, but you can't release them."

The track regained popularity in 2020 and later again in 2021 due to TikTok and became the third song from Electra Heart to be certified RIAA gold on March 26th.[6] Co-writer and producer Rick Nowels called its certification "recognition of fine art" and one of his favourites.[7] It is her most streamed song on Spotify, and one of three songs to have over 200m streams.[8]

During a live Q&A on May 19, 2021, Marina responded to a question relating to the possibility of a music video for the song in response to the popularity it had gained:[9]

No, I can't do that. I can't go back like 9 years, but don't think people didn't try. Atlantic Records I see you, you wanted me to do that. It's a no, [...] you can't go back to the past.

On May 21, 2022, Marina again mentioned her desire at the time to make the song a single, and then later the label's request for a music video:[10]

I literally pleaded with my label at the time to make it a single. I remember saying “I feel really confident people will like this!”

10 years later:
Label: “will Marina make a music video for this?”
Me: “Absolutely not”

Lyrics[]

[Hook]
Oh, oh, oh oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh

[Verse 1]
Got a figure like a pin-up, got a figure like a doll
Don't care if you think I'm dumb, I don't care at all
Candy bear, sweetie pie, wanna be adored
I'm the girl you'd die for

[Pre-Chorus]
I'll chew you up and I'll spit you out
'Cause that's what young love is all about
So pull me closer and kiss me hard
I'm gonna pop your bubblegum heart

[Chorus]
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch

[Hook]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh

[Verse 2]
Queentex, latex, I'm your wondermaid
Life gave me some lemons so I made some lemonade
Soda pop, soda pop, baby here I come
Straight to number one

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh dear diary, I met a boy
He made my doll heart light up with joy
Oh dear diary, we fell apart
Welcome to the life of Electra Heart

[Chorus]
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch

[Bridge]
I think I want your, your American tan, oh oh oh
I think you're gonna be my biggest fan, oh oh oh

[Chorus]
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch

I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss
I'm miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch
I'm gonna be your bubblegum bitch
