Bump in the Night is an unreleased song by Marina Diamandis, although recorded during the creation of her second studio album, it was not intended for Electra Heart.

The song was written by Marina but any co-writers are unknown, Stargate produced the track.

Background[]

The original file of Bump in the Night gives an export date of June 10, 2011,[2] a day later on the 11th, Marina Tweeted:[3]

At Jay-ZZZ's Roc the Mic studios in New York. With Norway's finest. Magic days ...

When leaked, alongside Eternity and the original Radioactive demo, the songs were said to have been produced by Stargate.[4] Although dbree is an unreliable source as file names can be edited, this is likely true due to the context.

During a podcast, Marina explained she worked with Stargate for three days. Every day, she was played a backing track to pick, write over, and later edit with them.[5]

Unknown Purpose[]

In the song, Marina sings "calm down Marina" rather than "Electra". She came up with the name "Electra Heart" in November 2010, with the intention of using it for online handles.[6] In early 2011, she intended to do Electra Heart alongside die Life her initial idea for her second album, starting "The Archetypes"[7] in March, and scrapping die Life in favor of Electra Heart in April 2011.[8]

Bubblegum Bitch, Electra Heart and The Archetypes all use the name "Electra Heart". With Electra Heart was recorded at the beginning of the era[9][10] and Bubblegum Bitch in May 2011.[11] Marina's first post on the Electra Heart Tumblr was June 2, meaning Bump in the Night was unlikely to have been for Electra Heart, and due to the theme was perhaps for a soundtrack. Though, we will never know for sure.

Trivia[]

  • This song, along with Eternity and a Radioactive demo, was recorded in June 2011 in Marina's sessions with Stargate.[unreliable source]
  • "Things that go bump in the night" is a common phrase that denotes ghosts or other supposed supernatural beings, regarded as the cause of unexplained or frightening noises heard at night.

In an 2019 interview, Marina said:[12]

Whenever people talk about ghosts, or like I see a ghost story on TV, my eyes water and I feel sick… why!? I've never seen a ghost. I've definitely felt presences before, I've woken up to someone like shouting in my ear or like saying something. Many times that has happened, and it's not part of a dream. But I haven't seen anything like move around but my eyes always water when people tell me ghost stories!

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Bump in the night
Bump in the night

[Verse 1]
I see figures that don't exist
Haunted after permanently in my fears
Holy smoke, what was that noise?
Calm down Marina, yeah, you must be paranoid

[Chorus]
I heard, I heard a bump in the night
I heard, I heard a terrible cry
When I'm all alone in an empty home
I heard, I heard a bump in the night

[Post-Chorus]
Bump in the night
Bump in the night

[Verse 2]
Got my heart in my mouth, haven't got a doubt
Somebody else is living in this house
I can feel you permanently watching me
Why can't you just let me go?
Why can't you just let me be?

[Chorus]
I heard, I heard a bump in the night
I heard, I heard a terrible cry
When I'm all alone in an empty home
I heard, I heard a bump in the night

[Post-Chorus]
Yeah
A bump in the night
Woo
A bump in the night
Yeah
A bump in the night
Woo
A bump in the night

[Bridge]
You seem to change in the night
And I watch you fade in the light

[Chorus]
I heard, I heard a bump in the night
I heard, I heard a terrible cry
When I'm all alone in an empty home
I heard, I heard a bump in the night

[Post-Chorus]
Yeah
A bump in the night
Woo
A bump in the night
Yeah
A bump in the night
Woo
A bump in the night
