Dirty Sheets is an unreleased song by Marina Diamandis, initially intended for her first studio album, The Family Jewels; it then may have been intended for the scrapped repackage of The Family Jewels, or her scrapped second studio album, die Life.

The song was written and produced by Marina herself.

Background[]

The fan-site rockabilly.net places Dirty Sheets around February 27, 2010,[2] however this was just when the song was registered, which is not necessarily when the song was written or produced.[3]

Due to the date it was registered, Dirty Sheets was potentially a demo for The Family Jewels' repackage, as Marina expressed a desire in December 2009 to do a second release as an extension of the album, akin to 'The Fame Monster' by Lady Gaga.[4] Like the Other Girls was recorded in January 2010 and also confirmed to be intended for this scrapped release. It is unknown when the repackage was scrapped in favour of her (at-the-time) second album die Life exactly, although Living Dead (written in March of the same year)[5] signalled the direction for the project according to Marina.

Dirty Sheets fits the description of a die Life track:[6]

[the album is] about sex in a lot of different ways: it’s about actual sex, it’s about being a female, being a feminist. I’m so in love with it at the moment. It’s exactly how I thought I should progress.

As no studio-recorded version of the song has leaked, (many die Life demos leaked in early 2011), and with it only being given a registration number of "2", the track was likely shelved before having a studio version recorded.

In 2021, Marina expressed interest to re-record the song for her Demo Album, though it is not known if this will happen.[7]

Registration[]

On ASCAP/BMI the song was registered once,[8] and it was registered 3 times on registry site GEMA,[9] every time with no co-writers. The each version is under the registration status "2" which indicates a work not yet distributable. The first is under the frame type "original" and the rest under the frame type "remodelling", with slightly different publishers. It was given an ISCW number on both sites.[10]

Trivia[]

  • In 2021, Marina expressed a desire to re-record the song, calling the chorus "so good".[11]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Dirty houses, dirty sheets
Wonderbra and unclean feet
Happen once and happen twice
I wanted a slice of you

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Female guilt is a fast swimmer
I wanna be the only winner
Of your body, let's skip
The pretenses of dinner

[Chorus]
True love isn't enough for us
True love isn't found like this
I should think before I kiss
Frogs who will never become princes

[Verse 2]
Fantasies, they keep me dry
Apple of my daddy's eye
Taught me sex was a bad thing
Gave me deviant longing

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Female guilt, it grabs you by the balls
It flies and it runs and it dances and crawls
Let us make-believe we have it all

[Chorus]
True love isn't enough for us
True love isn't found like this
I should think before I kiss
Frogs who will never become princes, yeah (Princes, yeah)

[Outro]
True love isn't for us
True love isn't found like this
I should think before I kiss
Frogs who will never become princes
