E.V.O.L is a standalone single by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Intended for her second studio album, Electra Heart. Initially, the song was only sent to those signed up to Diamandis' mailing list prior to February 13, 2013, and only available to stream on Soundcloud. However, on the 10th anniversary of Electra Heart, E.V.O.L was released on the Platinum Blonde Edition of the album.

The song was written by Marina and Liam Howe, and produced by Howe.

E.V.O.L was used as Part 8 of 'The Archetypes', and is a 'Homewrecker' song.

Background[]

The song's lyrics were first teased on July 2, 2011, on Marina's blog:[1]

I look at you, you look at me. Milk and roses, squeaky clean. You are the best i’ve ever seen. And I’m your dying beauty queen.

An abridged version of the song was first heard in part eight of The Archetypes video series, released on February 13, 2013. The next day, those subscribed to Marina's emailing list received a download link to the full version of the song. The link has since been removed.

It is still available to stream on Marina's official SoundCloud, however, it was not made available for purchase on digital stores nor released physically.

In 2022, during the Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land Tour, Marina joked with the audience about setlist requests from fans, specifically mentioning E.V.O.L and Scab and Plaster as popular requests, adding she would play them "one day maybe".[2] However this did not occur.

On April 29, E.V.O.L was released on Electra Heart (Platinum Blonde Edition), to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the album.

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Yeah, yeah, yeah...

[Verse 1]
Pink lipstick stains, cigarette butts
I lie in bed, I hate my guts
A day in the dark
A murdered afternoon, yeah

Oh, baby, darling, how I long
To become your suicide blonde
To lie beside my Romeo
Oh, what a wicked way to go

[Chorus]
It only takes two lonely people
To fuck love up and make it evil
It only takes a drop of evil
To fuck up two beautiful people

[Post-Chorus]
L-O-V-E, L-O-V-E
L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L
L-O-V-E, do you love me?
L-O-V-E, love is evil

[Verse 2]
Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker
Every kiss you give me makes me sicker
A day in the dark
A day in a cloud of gloom, yeah

I look at you, you look at me
Milk and roses, squeaky clean
Well, you're the best I've ever seen
And I'm your dying beauty queen

[Chorus]
It only takes two lonely people
To fuck love up and make it evil
It only takes a drop of evil
To fuck up two beautiful people

[Post-Chorus]
L-O-V-E, L-O-V-E
L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L
L-O-V-E, do you love me?
L-O-V-E, love is evil

[Bridge]
Yeah, yeah, yeah...
Yeah... (L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L)
Yeah... (L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L)
Yeah... (L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L)
L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L

[Chorus]
It only takes two lonely people
To fuck love up and make it evil
It only takes a drop of evil
To fuck up two beautiful people

[Post-Chorus]
L-O-V-E, L-O-V-E
L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L
(Do you love me, yeah?)
L-O-V-E, do you love me?
L-O-V-E, love is evil

[Outro]
Do you, do you, do you love me, yeah?
(L-O-V-E, E-V-O-L)
Do you love me, yeah?
L-O-V-E, love is evil
