EAT THE WORLD (also titled Eat The World: A Collection of Poems)[1] is the debut poetry book by Marina Diamandis, published on October 29, 2024 by Penguin Random House and Canongate Books Ltd.
A Portuguese edition of the book titled Devore o Mundo is set to be published on March 31, 2026, by Belas-Letras.[2][3] The book was translated by Alana Carolina Martins.
Background[]
On April 2, 2024, In an interview with the Rolling Stone, Marina said:[4] I tried [Magic Mushrooms], and it just felt so weird. I suddenly was like, "I think these are poems, actually." As soon as I accepted that, I started writing poetry every single day. For a whole summer, it was every single morning.
On July 19, in an email sent to those on her mailing list, she shared:[5]
❝ Some of you may not be poetry fans yet— tbh I wasn't a big reader of poetry before I wrote this book — but I always inspired by the idea of modernising a traditional art form. Poetry can be as resonant as a pop song and that's my hope for this book.
I've written about topics that are relevant to my life as a 21st century woman. E.g The absolute *hellscape* of dating apps, sex, depression, teenage trauma, transformation, break ups and a loneliness that followed me my whole life. Just light stuff.
Writing it really helped me get through a hard chapter of life, so I hope it will bring solace to others dealing with the same issues. I have the type of brain that can only focus on one project at a time, so as soon as I finished the book, I immediately began writing my next record. ❞
Inspiration[]
During Electra Heart Marina read Dorothy Parker, who's "acidic wit" she cites as inspiration, and this was the only poetry Marina had read up until that point.[6] She also acknowledges Eve Babitz, who's work she binge read in a year.[6] On her Manchester book tour, Marina stated that she went to see Rupi Kaur live, and called her a "really beautiful poet".[7]
Composition[]
Writing[]
When asked by a fan how she knows if what she's writing will be a song or a poem, Marina stated:[8] "Before it's written. It feels like it comes from a different part of the brain."
Poems[]
On January 31, 2023, she tweeted a preview of Eat the World,[9] announcing the rest would be available the next day.[10] She later replied to a follower on Instagram, stating:[11] "for some people earlier ... if they follow an old tumblr of mine 🫢". A few hours later, the full poem was released on her third Tumblr blog, Marina Book.[12]
The next day, on February 1, she released the full poem on her other social media platforms.[13]
On March 10, Marina posted a piece of poetry titled The Sparkling Clam,[14] followed by a snippet of Cocoon on December 18.[15]
On April 2, 2024, two new poems were revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone,[16] Sex Robot and Proof of Time. Later the same day Diamandis posted pain eraser to social media.[17] On May 09, Marina posted Aspartame to social media, tagging eating disorder organisations.[18]
On June 14, Diamandis posted the previously announced Proof of Time to social media.[19]
On July 8, she ran an Instagram poll with three options: "loneliness" "dating" or "starlight water space fresh air", the next day she revealed the poem had won 46% of the vote and posted the poem to her social media.[20] On the 19th, she posted Beautiful/Evil to social media.[21]
On October 12, posted the previously teased Sex Robot, 6 days later she posted Death by Panamera, and on the 24th she posted the previously teased Cocoon.

Artwork[]
When asked by Vanity fair how much involvement she had in the design, Marina said:[6]
❝ Formatting completely, and then the design, I worked closely with a graphic designer called Dominique [Falcone], and she drew a lot of inspiration from vintage photographs, and hand drawn things. The visual element was really important because early on, I started to look at examples of visual poetry on the internet, and one of the main people who did it was this artist and poet called [Ardengo] Soffici. I was just like, "How can I make poetry come alive in a different way for fans of my music who might not usually read poetry, or even read books very much?" ❞
When asked if the album had any colour symbolism behind the artwork, she said:[22] I didn't, but I knew I wanted like, a hot pink in there for a long time. Then Dominique, the designer, paired it with orange, but I think a kind of clashing, loud tones felt like they connected with Eat the World as a poem. It's like trying to wrap up or encapsulate this quite chaotic, wild time in my life, from the age of like, 18 to 35.

Table of Contents[]
On July 9, 2024, Marina posted a partial table of contents to her Instagram Stories.[23] The full table of contents was available in the Apple Books sample prior to the publication of the book. There are 39 poems in total, including the 'Introduction', Diamandis was 39 at the time the book was released. She said of the order of poems:[6]
❝ It is chronological. I tried to do it based on the emotional arc of a chapter in my life, when I was going through difficulty, which ends with “Cocoon,” and then “Eat the World." Even though [“Eat the World”] was one of the first ones I wrote, it feels like a finalizing summary of a chapter of my life, really, from my late teens up until my mid-30s. I think the book explores a lot of emotional passions that have held me back, and much like with an album, for me the purpose of making creative work is to try and get through something. ❞
