The song was written by Marina, both members of Broods, and produced by Sam de Jong.

Background[]
In July 2016, Marina made an Instagram post stating that she was "writing music and trying to understand life".[1] Marina revealed she wrote Emotional Machine first, after FROOT,[2] so this is likely what she was referencing. In October 2016, she said she was in the studio/writing again.[3]
On March 22, 2018, Marina first teased the song title in an Instagram post, in which she can be heard playing an omnichord and singing "The day I was born". The post features the caption "Emotional Machine".[4] As these lyrics do not appear in the final, these are likely demo lyrics.
On September 29, the song was performed live for the first time with Broods, at Neon Gold X. A celebration of Neon Gold's 10 year anniversary.
On March 8, 2019, the instrumental was featured in LOVE + FEAR's album trailer.

❝ I wrote a version of this song shortly after FROOT and I loved it, but it was a bit of a mess. I took it into a session with [New Zealand electro-pop siblings] Broods, and we rewrote the pre-chorus, sorted out the chorus and Georgia [Nott, Broods’ vocalist] lending her angelic voice to the backing vocals and chorus. I came to co-writing in a really nice way, actually. ❞
