The "FROOT era" roughly spans from 2014 to 2016, when she officially ended the era. "FROOT" refers to the album, whereas "Froot" refers to the single.
This timeline uses UK release dates, and also includes some events that occurred "out of era" but relate to the album.
2012[]
September[]
Gold was written in Germany[1] whilst Marina was supporting Coldplay on their Mylo Xyloto Tour.
November[]
Happy was (partially) written in Germany[2] with only the verses completed. The chorus was written 3 months later in March 2013.[3]
2013[]
Marina said that Better Than That was one of the first songs to be written, and said "it's really important for the sound of the record 'cause that was one of the first songs I wrote and that heralded the new shift in direction."[4]
May[]
On the 12th, a video interview with PopBytes was posted, in which Marina says she wants to record in Scandinavia.[5]
June[]
On the 11th, in an interview with Confront Magazine she was asked if she had any ideas about what she wanted out of her next album:[6]
- You know what? I don’t even know and I don’t care! I think whatever I write, it will find it’s own form. It’s a completely different approach to writing this album as opposed to the first two. I was so intense about everything because I wanted it to be really good, but now I feel the complete opposite.
August[]
On the 9th, in a now deleted tweet, Dan Dare (Producer of Just Desserts) claimed he'd worked on a new song with Marina, however no further information was released.[7] Later in 2014 when he claimed to be in the studio with Marina,[8] she indirectly called him out and said the picture was from 2013, the only time they had worked together.[9]
October[]
On the 8th, Marina tweeted: Recording in a studio called "Pop Cemetery"[10]
None of the songs that were featured on FROOT were recorded at Pop Cemetery. It is unknown if these songs were for FROOT or for something else.
2014[]
Marina Diamandis met up with David Kosten in 2014, something he recalls in an interview with Nylon:[11]
❝ 'I told her I wanted to make a record that says, 'Back off, motherfuckers,' something that is hopefully untouchable in a creative way. She liked the idea, and that line—'Back off, motherfuckers'—is immortalized in song now [Can't Pin Me Down].' Diamandis sent Kosten rough demos that he says 'sounded like they had been recorded down a deep well,' and over generous amounts of greasy food from nearby Portabello Road, 'we made an album paying homage to Pat Benatar or Like a Prayer-era Madonna'. ❞
January[]
Froot was one of the last songs to be written, and was written on a "pretty dreary day in January," initially called "Pamplemousse,"[12] her home demo was almost seven minutes long.[13]
February[]
In her track-by-track of FROOT, Marina mentions she wrote Forget after a BRIT awards party.[14]
March[]
On the 6th, Marina tweeted:[15] "I've been saving all my summers for you."
April[]
Marina booked three months of studio time with David Kosten.[16]
On the 29th, Marina tweeted:[17] "S*T*U*D*I*O"

July[]
On the 16th, Marina shared a snippet of I'm Not Hungry Anymore.[21]
August[]
Marina started to heavily tease Froot, later stating it was one of the last and most difficult songs to be written for the album.[22] Marina wanted the album to be named after one of the songs and felt Froot fit the most in terms of how she was feeling and what she wanted it to symbolise.[23]
On the 8th, Marina tweeted:[24] "PINKER THAN SHEPHERD'S DELIGHT"
On the 13th, Marina tweeted:[25] "🍇..."
On the 15th, the first photoshoot for the album's visuals took place, photographed by Charlotte Rutherford for the artworks of Froot, Happy, Forget, Gold, Blue and the FROOT Acoustic EP.
On the 28th, Marina tweeted:[26] "Carnal flower, Bloody rose"
September[]
On the 11th, Marina tweeted:[27] "Hangin' around like a fruit on a tree..."
October[]
On the 9th, Marina shared the entirety of Froot's lyrics.[28]
On the 10th, Marina's birthday, Froot was announced as the title track for the album,[29] with its official audio being posted to YouTube.[30]
On the 12th, Marina shared a photo of her with her mother and sister at her FROOT themed birthday party, with lyrics from Froot as the caption:[31] "'C'mon fill your cup up...' #🍇"
On the 13th, three days after its release, Marina thanked her fans for 1 million views on Froot. [32] Later on the 29th, it would reach 2 million.[33]

November[]
On the 11th, Froot was officially released as a single and first "Froot of the Month". The music video was later released on the same day.[37]
2015[]
April[]
On the 17th, an interview with Marina said she wanted to add seven additional songs,[38] which could possibly mean she wanted to add another song for each of the six 'froot' and perhaps a song that didn't fit or would embody all of them, such as True Colours.
May[]
On the 21st, Diamandis posted to Instagram:[39] Writing in Dallas.
On the 22nd, an an interview was published with FaceCulture, in which she expressed her plans to repackage FROOT, with a "new name" and 4-5 more songs. Mentioning she had "a few" unfinished songs that didn't make it onto the original tracklist, but would be "really fitting" for the repackage.[40]
June[]
On the 23rd, in response to a fan's question asking if the songs would be ready for the Neon Nature Tour, Marina answered:[41]
❝ Tbh, I don't know. I'm always writing- and you will definitely get one more song from the FROOT sessions (hehe..) - but I'm undecided about whether I will do a repack or start a new piece of work/ new projects. We'll see!!! ❞
July[]
On the 13th, Marina was in the studio, likely for the repackage.[42]
2016[]
January[]
On the 8th, David Kosten tweeted:[43] Frootorabilia just unearthed from the sorry mess of my desk (in order of recording).
This included a list of 14 songs, featuring two songs that were previously unheard of: Saviour and When You Take Away Control.
April[]
On the 5th, Marina announced the end of the FROOT era:[44]
❝ I just want to take a moment to thank you for being a part of the FROOT journey.
I've been looking at your photos and letters today and whilst I feel so sad to see this project come to an end I'm full of joy for the memories we all created together.
The Neon Nature tour was my favourite tour I've ever done. The hardest in every sense but the most creatively satisfying. You guys sold out almost every show. What a huge success you have made this era for me.
I remember growing up how difficult it was to afford the expense of an album or concert ticket so I deeply understand the sacrifices some of you have made throughout the years to come and share a moment with me. Thank you.
It is an absolute privilege to have a profession that allows me the opportunity to connect and communicate with like-minded people all over the world and I hope to continue to do so in many different ways.
Love,
Marina xx

2023[]
March[]
On the 13th, Marina posted to social media:[45][46] Happy 8th Birthday FROOT 🍇🍌🍒🍊🍋🍏🍑
To her Instagram stories, she reposted a story by @pissychu which read:[47]
❝ @marinadiamandis On the 8th anniversary of FROOT I want you guys to appreciate a few things if you didn't live through this era. Her label wanted to shelve this. An infact they did, for months, because MARINA DARED to write the album alone.
She DARED to challenge a label that just wanted Electra Heart part two. She DARED to also 'alienate' some fans who just wanted more Electra Heart. Because this was her vision. She funded the artwork and created the campaign on her own to get it released. ❞
2024[]
March[]
On the 14th, Marina posted to Instagram:[48] "Happy 9th Birthday “FROOT”
Next year we’ll release something verrry special for it.", hinting towards a repackage or merch release in 2025.
