Fear and Loathing, is a song released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her second studio album, Electra Heart, it is the 12th and final track on the standard edition.

The song was written by Marina alone, and produced by Liam Howe.

Fear and Loathing was used as Part 1 of 'The Archetypes', and is a 'Beauty Queen' song.

Background[]

Marina called Fear and Loathing a turning point in her life, after which she stopped being a "bitter person" and began to work with new people and try new things, even though she wrote the song alone in her bedroom in London. She placed the track last on Electra Heart because she views it as a "letting go" song.[1]

In August 2011, in an interview with Popjustice, she said:[2]

You know the line in 'Fear & Loathing' about trying to have it all but ending up with not very much at all? Could you give an example of when that has happened?

Yes. I mean, you know my personality I think. It just seems like people who don't try in life, it kind of works for them. But because I wanted it so badly on my first album, and also because I'm a bigmouth and I like to say ridiculous things, when you don't meet your own expectations or you don't achieve the things you've said you want to achieve, you feel like a failure. And quite frankly I still am in my head, because I know where I want to go.

Trivia[]

  • Also known as Fear & Loathing.
  • The black slip worn by Marina in the music video is also seen in Shampain's.[3]
  • The Morse code that can be heard in the song spells out "stranger". This was unintentional, as her and her team simply picked a sample they liked from a site.[citation needed]
  • Marina's grandmother, who was 93 at the time, is featured on the track. Marina recorded her "gran" while she was cooking in her kitchen, singing "an old Greek folk song," which is faintly heard at the end of Fear and Loathing.

Behind the Scenes

Background

Marina told BBC:[3]

It was a one-take thing. I couldn't mess it up, there's very little focus on my face in the video, and that was all on purpose, it's a rejection of identity... Sometimes, you have to get lost to find yourself again.

Lyrical Differences[]

In the demo version's alternate chorus, Marina sings the lyric "I wanna be completely faithless" rather than the final's "don't wanna be completely faithless". The demo also lacks Diamandis' grandmother singing "an old Greek folk song" entirely.

[Verse 1]
I've lived a lot of different lives
Been different people many times
I live my life in bitterness
And fill my heart with emptiness

And now I see, I see it for the first time
There is no crime in being kind
Not everyone is out to screw you over
Maybe, yeah just maybe they just wanna get to know ya

[Pre-Chorus]
And now the time is here
Baby, you don't have to live your life in fear
And the sky is clear, is clear of fear

[Chorus]
Don't wanna live in fear and loathing
I wanna feel like I am floating
Instead of constantly exploding
In fear and loathing

[Verse 2]
Got different people inside my head
I wonder which one that they like best
I'm done with tryin' to have it all
And ending up with not much at all

[Pre-Chorus]
And now the time is here
Baby, you don't have to live your life in fear
And the sky is clear, is clear of fear, of fear

[Chorus]
Don't wanna live in fear and loathing
I wanna feel like I am floating
Instead of constantly exploding
In fear and loathing

[Bridge]
And when the time comes along and the lights run out
I know a light will burn on when they blow me out

[Alternate Chorus]
Don't wanna live in fear and loathing
I wanna feel like I am floating
Instead of constantly exploding
In fear and loathing

I wanna be completely weightless
I wanna touch the edge of greatness
Don't wanna be completely faithless
Completely faithless

[Outro]
When the time comes around
When the lights will go out
When the time comes around
And the lights, they go out
