Forget is a single by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her third studio album, FROOT, it is the 5th track on the album, and was released as the 4th single.
The song was written by Marina alone and produced by David Kosten.
Forget was represented by a green apple in the 'Froot of the Month' campaign, and paired alongside Weeds on Marina's website during the era.[1]
Background[]
Marina wrote the song "extremely hungover" day after a BRIT Awards party,[2] sometime in February 2014.
Initially the song was left off the recording list.[3] However, midway through recording Marina's label refused to pay for the mixing of the album, causing Marina to pay for it herself, along with the photoshoot.[4] The line "I've put my money where my mouth is" is likely in reference to the incident, and possibly why the song took the place of either Saviour or When You Take Away Control.
Meaning[]
Marina stated the song encapsulates the mood of the record, as it is about taking a look at her entire life from a larger perspective.[5]
Trivia[]
- In a track-by-track interview, Marina calls the song one of her favourites.[6]
- For unknown reasons, on the vinyl, Forget is paired with Gold, and represented by an orange,[7] contradicting the 'Froot of the Month' campaign.
Connections[]
- The theme of weighing scales: "Ever since I can remember, life was like a tipping scale" links the song to:
- Horror Pop: "The weighing scales they broke my back, that's what imbalanced me."
- Demons and Angels: "Try to change but I can’t get a grip, I’ve been waiting for the scales to tip."
- Marina's astrological sign, Libra, is represented by weighing scales.
- The theme of "a million dollars" links the song to:
- Gold: “I don't care that everybody knows, I'm a million dollars in the hole.”
- Cruel: “Cause I’m a million dollar jewel.”
- Venus Fly Trap: “I earned it all myself, and I'm a millionairess.”

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Sometimes I think I'm not that strong
But there's a force that carries me on
Sick of my small heart, made of steel
Sick of the wounds that never heal (Never heal)
[Pre-Chorus 1]
'Cause I have lived my life in debt
I've spent my days in deep regret
Yeah, I've been living in the red
Oh, 'cause I can't forgive and I can't forget, forget
[Chorus]
Forget, forget
Forget, forget
Ain't no time for regret
Yeah, it's time to forget
[Verse 2]
Ever since I can remember
Life was like a tipping scale
Like an abacus I played with
Counting every win and fail (Win and fail)
[Pre-Chorus 2]
'Cause I have lived my life in debt
I've spent my days in deep regret
Yeah, I've been living in the red
But I wanna forgive and forget
[Chorus]
Forget, forget
Forget, forget
Ain't no time for regret
Yeah, it's time
[Post-Chorus]
To be letting go
Oh, baby you know
What I'm talking about
Got nothing to lose and nothing to prove
Oh, baby, I'm bowing out
Out, I'm bowing out
[Bridge]
Yeah, I've been dancing with the Devil
I love that he pretends to care
If I'll ever get to Heaven
When a million dollars gets you there
Oh, all the time that I have wasted
Chasing rabbits down a hole
When I was born to be the tortoise
I was born to walk alone
Forget about it
Forget about it
Forget about it
[Chorus]
Forget, forget
Forget, forget
Ain't no time for regret
[Outro]
I'm gonna leave the past behind
I've had enough, I'm breaking free
No pressing stop, erase, rewind
That chain of thought that followed me
I've put my money where my mouth is
For the first time in my life
I've made mistakes but I believe that
Everything was worth the fight
'Cause, in the end, the road is long
But only 'cause it makes you strong
It's filled with peaks and twists and turns
Sometimes you have to learn to forget about it
