Background[]
Marina potentially alluded to the track in late 2020 to early 2021 by having "i love you" in her social media bios. The song's existence was officially revealed on April 14, 2021, when Marina announced the album and its track list.[1]
The song was leaked early on June 6, along with the rest of the album due to CDs being sold early in various stores.
The song was speculated to have a remix with the artist Beach Bunny releasing near the end of October following YouTube identifying the song audio with the feature.[2] Beach Bunny tweeted "here’s a hint: 💎",[3] as well as tweeting that something will be coming at the end of October.[4] The remix was announced on October 18, and released two days later on the 20th, at midnight local time.
Meaning[]
In a 2021 interview on The Travis Mills Show, Marina explained:[5]
❝ It's [I Love You But I Love Me More] about doing something that's really hard for people in relationships, which is choosing yourself, even if you love that other person so much. And it's so much easier to say it, but not put it into practice. So this song is about that, it's about encouraging you to do that. ❞
