Man's World is a single by Marina Diamandis, released under her current stage name 'MARINA'. Appearing on her fifth studio album, Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, it is the 3rd track on the album, and 1st single off the album.
The song was written alone, and co-produced by Marina, with Jennifer Decilveo credited as the main producer.
Background[]
According to Marina, the song was written around August 2019. It was finalised in February 2020, and was originally planned to be released at Coachella, however, the music festival was ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
On March 8, 2020, on International Woman's Day, a snippet of the song was posted by Marina to her Instagram story.[2] Marina later posted the song's title on Twitter,[3] which was then quoted by Neon Gold with the added caption "Happy International Women’s Day, something special coming soon."[4]
On November 10, the snippet was recognised by Shazam as "Man's World", ahead of the song's official release. [5] Several fans received promotional postcards in the mail before the song was officially announced.[6]
On the 13th, Marina revealed the single artwork and release date on Instagram and Twitter, as well as links to pre-save the song.[7] She later posted an extended snippet on TikTok.[8]
Upon its official release on the 18th, Marina unveiled new Man's World merchandise.[9] This includes a limited edition hot pink vinyl, clothing items, a popsocket and a face mask. The official lyrics were posted to Marina's social media accounts 2 days after the release on the 20th.[10]
On December 11, a "stripped" version was released featuring an acoustic rendition of the song, produced by James Flannigan.
On January 6, 2021, Man's World (MUNA remix) was released on streaming platforms. On the 27th, Pabllo Vittar confirmed the rumours about their feature on a Man's World remix. The artwork, features and release date were revealed on Twitter on February 1,[11] and a few days later on the 4th, the remix by Empress Of and featuring Pabllo Vittar was released.
Meaning[]
Marina has said of the songs meaning:[12]
❝ The original idea for the song was to write a snapshot of how women and LGBTQ+ individuals have been subjugated and discriminated against throughout history going back to the Salem witch trials, where any person who was deemed abnormal or slightly alternative was singled out. Those kinds of patterns are still present in society. That’s something inspiring to me and worth writing about. ❞
Later saying, "Man's World" is a feminist anthem. "I was feeling fatigued with the current system. I want to see change."[13]
Controversy[]
On March 19, 2021, Marina posted a series of photos in the Beverly Hills Hotel to Instagram with the caption:[14] At the campest hotel in LA 🌈
It is mentioned in the lyrics of Man's World that the hotel is owned by the "sheik that killed thousands of gay men", which drew criticism from her fans;[15] Marina has not acknowledged the criticism to date.
Trivia[]
- Marina has described this song and Purge the Poison as "sister songs".[16]
- Marina has synaesthesia and sees Man's World as "one of" the songs that are clashing pinks and reds.[17]
- Man's World is only one of two single covers (the other being Radioactive) to be a photo taken on the set of the music video, rather than being from the official album shoot.
- This is Marina's second released song to feature another artist's vocals on a remixed version, the first being the Kitty Pryde remix of How to Be a Heartbreaker.

Background
The creative direction and story for the music video is credited to Marina. The cinematography was done by Fiorella Occhipinti.
Speaking about the music video's concept and production, Marina told Vogue:[18]
❝ It’s the first one I’ve ever been credited with creative directing and writing the story for—again, I’ve done this role before, but it’s one of those basic things where people think the artist didn’t do it because their name isn’t always on it. I came up with the treatment in March, then sent it to Alex, and we developed it more together. I’ve been inspired by this artist who made these neoclassical paintings in the late 1800s named John William Godward. They use these very modern color compositions like mint green with chartreuse or magenta. That was the center of the whole video and the main visual inspiration. ❞
❝ [The costumes] were all custom-made by Olima. He had previously done a lot of my touring costumes but for this shoot, I knew from the start we needed to create our own looks. I wanted the look to kind of accentuate any body shape as well. ❞
