❝ We are meeting a Marina who is not guarding her heart so much anymore. I think part of why this album has felt so freeing is that I think I’ve really dove into my fear of love. That’s why for me, it’s so powerful that this superheroine’s biggest power is love. It can sound trite, but the ability to love is so powerful and brave. It’s a courageous thing, particularly if you’ve been hurt in the past. It can be really hard to reprogram yourself, and I’ve finally been able to do that. Maybe to others, I’ve had a bold energy. Internally, I’ve always struggled to feel like I’m allowed to be my own person. The album is about teaching yourself — or re-teaching yourself — how to love. ❞ - Marina for Rolling Stone.[2]
Inspiration[]
On October 1, 2021, Marina posted to social media:[3]
❝ dreaming up the next tour… and doing some research. Been thinking about how much music + a connection with a like minded audience has healed me over the years. Thank you for existing 🌷excited for the next chapter. I’m writing album 6. ❞
In a 2025 interview with Plastik, Marina described the album as:[4] "very playful and has a character-led concept, but not in the same way as Electra Heart."
❝ Inspired by the superpower that is love. The album explores the concepts of power and leadership for a new generation. It’s a record that is built on the belief that love doesn’t make us weak, it’s something to be empower by and celebrated. ❞ - Marina's Website[5]
Name[]
On September 27, 2024, Marina first teased the title on social media with the caption:[6] P.O.P ⭑ ;)
On the April 10, 2025, with the release of Contissimo, Marina announced the title:[7] ☆ PRINCESS OF POWER ☆
❝ Just because I've named it Princess of Power doesn't mean that's how I've always felt. It's usually actually kind of the opposite. Sometimes what artists write about is what they're trying to bring in or manifest for themselves, and it always does come true. In my experience, whatever I've written about, I'm then given the opportunity to step into that experience. So with Princess of Power, [..] I think I was channelling, like reclaiming this part of myself, that I felt like I dampened for other people for a long time. Because I think people who really stand in their power are kind of threatening.
Like we've all experienced it, whether it's with friends, or family, or people in our workplace, where we step into a room and we feel great. And suddenly you feel like this weird energy from someone, like they don't like that you feel expansive or confident, and then you like make yourself small.
I've done that so much in my life that I [realised], "I am inherently powerful". We all are, but we sometimes stop ourselves from stepping into it because we are worried what that will do to our surroundings and our life. It's one of those funny things where sometimes certain qualities in someone are threatening to other people and we get bad reactions for it. So this album is really like putting all of that to a side. ❞ - Marina talking to Zach Sang.[8]
Composition[]

Marina in the studio
On May 12, 2022, during the Netherlands date on the Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land Tour, Marina said:[9]
❝ It's my last tour for this album, which is happy and sad. I get to write another record now. As usual, it's going to be incredibly different to this one. ❞
On July 19, 2024, Marina revealed whilst she had been writing alone for six months, she started to "crave" a collaborator to work with; and that she had found the "perfect creative partner" to both co-write and produce the album.[10]
Writing[]
On October 1, 2021, Marina first mentioned she was writing her next album.[11] These early writing sessions most likely became poems that are now part of Marina's first book, EAT THE WORLD, as mentioned in a Rolling Stone interview from April 2024.[12]
In the same 2024 interview, when asked about her next album, she responds with:[12] "I’ve been writing for six months. It’s still at the beginning. I haven’t started producing anything yet."
The first song that was written for the album was Everybody Knows I'm Sad, followed by Rollercoaster and Butterfly.[13]
Production[]
In a 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Marina said:[14]
❝ I had no intention to do a pop record. But I found my creative partner CJ Baran who is just so talented and it’s just been such an enjoyable experience. I think that’s why the energy of this record feels different: It’s part of my evolution as a human being. it’s a really fun record. It has a lot of energy. ❞
Her sonic inspiration for the album was '70s music such as ABBA, the 5th Dimension, Minnie Ripperton, and 2000's Madonna and Kylie; music that to her, "felt euphoric, natural, joyful and energetically bright."[15]
Release and Promotion[]
Singles[]
On January 31, 2025, Marina's official "HQ" gave coordinates to a QR code,[16] when scanned this sent fans to another location where they received a signed card with the date "02/21/25"[17] a colouring book page,[18] and live caterpillars with care instructions.[19]
On April 24, MarinaHQ invited LA fans to a private event on the 28th,[20] those in attendance voted to pick Marina's next single;[21] and had the option to pick between I <3 You, Princess of Power and Everybody Knows I'm Sad.

Whilst on the Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land Tour, Marina shared she was already planning her next tour.[22] On July 31 2024, following the BST Hyde Park Festival, Marina posted a video to her YouTube channel titled "So fun to play Hyde Park earlier this month. Can’t wait for next year…"[23] hinting to a tour taking place in 2025.

Upon the release of the album's artwork, fans immediately started to speculate if AI imagery was used[24] due to the confusing placement of Marina's arms, it appeared like both arms were on the back of the chair however a finger could be seen by her face.[25] Marina responded:[26]
❝ Considering I'm a benevolent queen I'll offer education... The corset was positioned below my boobs a common design in corsetry. The ribbon was molded into shape in real life from strips of hot plastic. It took a huge amount of time and care to position the ribbons mid air using invisible strings.
The finger on my shoulder is from my right arm that is covering my chest because it was not my desire to have my breasts on my album cover. I wanted this cover to communicate femininity, self reclamation and freedom. Hope that clears it up. ❞
For the first time in her career Marina made moodboards based on the song titles before she had even written the song, she said Rollercoaster and I Love You's moodboards were "really explosive in colour, and felt textural and very vibrant" and "very vintage; a lot of throwback references", however she wasn't sure if it translated into the final project, additionally she told Vogue:[13]
❝ it’s being about communicating femininity in a way that feels natural for me at this point in my life as a woman. Even with the album cover, I knew that I just wanted a bare, or semi-clothed back on the cover. I didn’t know anything else at the time—that there would be a corset, or ribbons. I just felt like it communicates sensuality, but not in a male gaze-y way. It’s more just letting femininity and sensuality shine, and not in a way that’s overtly sexual or shocking. And again, that’s just reclaiming parts of myself that I feel like I have had to keep wrapped up to keep people around me comfortable. I’ve come from quite a conservative culture on my Greek side. I’m sure a lot of women feel this, but with our sexual energy, it can feel like we’ve been taught that it’s this thing we have to temper. But if you do temper it, I think it throws your internal balance off. I think sexual energy is really important to our general health and contentedness, and again, it’s just gone so skew-whiff because of history. So I’ve been healing some of that as well. ❞
