Pink Convertible is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her current stage name 'MARINA'. Appearing on the deluxe edition of her fifth studio album, Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, it is the 12th track on the album, and was initially scrapped from the standard edition.

The song was written by Marina, and produced by Jennifer Decilveo.

Background[]

According to Marina, Pink Convertible was written pre-pandemic during the summer of 2019, following Man's World, which would make it the second written song for "Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land.[1]

On April 10, 2020, on Bose's Instagram live-stream, Marina played a snippet of Pink Convertible. Initially playing the wrong mix titled: "pink convertible - jack lesson",[2] she would go on to explain that she was unsure about the production, which was delaying its release.[3] Because of this, it's reasonable to assume the demo was co-produced by Jack Patterson, Marina's boyfriend at the time.

On April 13, 2021, when the tracklist for Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land was revealed,[4] this song was not included, despite teasing it prior.

On May 14, when asked by a fan why the track got scrapped, Marina replied with "She's safe in a garage don't worry".[5] Later, on the 31st, Marina posted a video which, in the background, showed a demo tracklist of the album. Pink Convertible was listed as track seven, and mastered with the rest of the album,[6] meaning the song was likely a last minute decision to scrap.

On June 18, during a meet and greet in support of Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, Marina said she was thinking of releasing the song as a standalone single instead of being included on the (potential) Demo Album.[citation needed] Later, on the 25th, Marina confirmed a deluxe of Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land on the "DOM POP" podcast. Her plans at the time mentioned the possibility of releasing known outtakes, Pink Convertible and Happy Loner, but was open to adding more songs. The deluxe's initial date was set "during or after fall" (Sept-Dec 2021).[7]

On August 20, the final instrumental leaked,[8] months before the final version was confirmed for release. This is another reason to believe the track was a very last minute exclusion, as the instrumental was likely uploaded to the database with the rest of the album. When fans passed the instrumental through music recognition websites, it showed the track being registered.

On December 2, the tracklist of Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land's deluxe edition was revealed with Pink Convertible as the 12th track.

On January 5, 2022, Marina revealed why Pink Convertible wasn't included on the standard edition of Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land in a reply to an Instagram comment:[9][10]

It was part of my writing sessions for ancient dreams. It was just very hard to narrow it down to 10 tracks + this one had a slightly different sonic edge to the other tracks. Thank God for deluxes ;)

Trivia[]

  • Despite not appearing on Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, the song was mastered (and presumably finalised) with the album and appearing as track seven before being removed last minute.[11]
    • The song was mastered on March 16, 2021.
  • Marina hadn't intended to reveal its title, but accidentally panned up when changing the volume during the Bose live-stream.
  • This is the first time an instrumental has leaked (20 Aug 2021) before a song has been released (07 Jan 2022).
  • Before the song was released, Marina described Pink Convertible as "very Rodeo Drive Melting Handbags Apocalypse meets Let’s Pretend It’s All Fine🛍🪄🙂👌🏼"[12]
  • The song was produced over Zoom in April, 2020.[13]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
In the city of metal and sun
Angels and demons on the run
Empty boulevards shine like a gun
Swimming pools of people having fun

Walking like zombies in the night
Don't fear the apocalypse, 'cause we'll survive
Handbag shopping on Rodeo Drive
Believing Armani will keep us alive

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I just wanna forget
How fucked up is our planet

[Chorus]
Laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine
Pink convertible, living in the free world
We’re so fucking blind, praying we’ll be fine
We keep laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine

[Verse 2]
Sorry to the flowers and the trees
And the fish poisoned in the seven seas
The private jet looks cool on the 'Gram
40 pairs of Nikes, you’re the man

Leave me alone with my luck and money
And I don’t want to know that it’s a time bomb, honey
Let me enjoy my lack of trouble
And nothing’s going to burst my money bubble

[Pre-Chorus 2]
We just wanna forget
How fucked up is our planet

[Chorus]
Laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine
Pink convertible, living in the free world
We’re so fucking blind, praying we’ll be fine
We keep laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine

[Bridge]
Let them eat cake and keep our engines running
Not even Marie Antoinette could see the end was coming
We party harder when there's no tomorrow
The time has come to help but now we're all falling like dominoes

[Chorus]
Laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine
Pink convertible, living in the free world
We’re so fucking blind, praying we’ll be fine
We keep laughing all the time, driving in the sunshine

[Demo Snippet]

And I don’t want to know that it’s a timebomb, honey
