Power & Control is a single by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her second studio album, Electra Heart, it is the 7th track on the album, and was released as the 2nd single.
The song was written by Marina and Steve Angello, and produced by Greg Kurstin.
Power & Control was used as Part 6 of 'The Archetypes', and is a 'Homewrecker' song.
Background[]
Initially, Marina's second studio album was a "dark electronic pop record"[1] produced by one producer[2] (Greg Kurstin), which would see her become "less commercial",[3] potentially releasing it with "no singles".[4] This album was called die Life.
On November 22, 2010, Marina tweeted: "Power & Control..."[5]
In early 2011, die Life demos were leaked, amongst them were demos of Power & Control. Ultimately the album was scrapped and merged with Electra Heart.
Power & Control was originally written by Marina alone, then brought to former Swedish House Mafia member Steve Angello to re-write. It was produced by Greg Kurstin at Echo Studio in Los Angeles, California and was then later mixed by Serban Ghenea at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Meaning[]
Diamandis explained that Power & Control details "the power struggle in relationships [where] there's always one person who wants the upper hand." It draws stylistic inspiration from "spacey synths and barely-there beats with a haunting chorus".[6]

- In a May 2012 interview, Marina called the song her favourite, alongside Starring Role and Bubblegum Bitch.[7]
