Marina and the Diamonds Wiki

Sex Yeah is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her second studio album, Electra Heart, it is the 14th track on the full length album.

The song was written by Marina and Greg Kurstin, who produced the track.

Background[]

Initially Marina's second studio album was a "dark electronic pop record"[1] produced by one producer[2] (Greg Kurstin), which would see her become "less commercial",[3] potentially releasing it with "no singles".[4] This album was called die Life, supposed to be: "all about the lyrics. It's quite political and it’s about feminism and sex. It's an abrasive pop record."[5]

The first demo was encoded with iTunes 9.2.1,[6] assuming the software was up to date, this would mean the track was recorded sometime between July 19, and September 1, 2010.[7]

The second demo was encoded with Logic 9.1.3,[8] which was available between October 28, 2010[9] and May 24, 2011.[10]

In December 2010, when asked what was a key song from her upcoming album, which at the time was die Life, Marina replied[11]

There's a song called Free Sex. The "Free Sex" as in women, it's a pop song but it's definitely not a standard pop song by any means.

In early 2011, die Life demos were leaked, amongst them was a rough concept demo entitled 'Free Sex', with another, more finished demo leaking later on. The song (then as Sex, Yeah!), along with Living Dead, leaked publicly in January[12]. Ultimately the album was scrapped and merged with Electra Heart.

Lyrical Differences[]

Demo 1 has no chorus, so Marina vocalises instead.

[Hook]
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da da da)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da, la da da da da)

[Verse 1]
Nothing is provocative anymore, even for kids
No room for imagining, 'cause everyone's seen everything

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Question what the TV tells you
Question what a pop-star sells you
Question mom and question dad
Question good and question bad

[Chorus]
If history could set you free
(From who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society
(Didn't tell a girl who she would be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me, me

[Hook]
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da da da)

[Verse 2]
If women were religiously, recognised sexually
We wouldn't have to feel the need, to show our
ass-ets to feel free

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt
Sold my soul and yeah, the truth hurts
Tired image of a star, acting naughtier than we really are

[Chorus]
If history could set you free
(From who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society
(Didn't tell a guy who he should be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me, me

[Hook]
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da da da)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da, la da da da da)

[Bridge]
All my life, I've felt it deep inside of me
All this time, was fighting for what I believe
All my life I've tried to hide what history has given me, me

[Chorus]
If history could set you free
(From who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society
(Didn't tell a guy who he should be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me, me

[Hook]
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La da da)

Sex, sex, sex, sex (La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
Sex, sex, sex, sex (Yeah)
Sex, sex, sex, sex (La-la-la)
Sex, sex, sex, sex (La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
