Described by Marina as one of the most thematically important songs off the album:[4]
❝ Solitaire is about sticking up for yourself and staying strong no matter what's going on around you. ❞
She later added on Twitter that the song's message is that she likes to be alone and that it can be good for people.[5] In reply to a Tumblr ask, Marina said:[6]
❝ Being introverted isn’t a personality flaw. I love being around people - and performing for people- but I really enjoy having time to myself too. I think at the time of writing I couldn’t bear being around anyone as I was very tired. ❞

- For unknown reasons, on the vinyl,[7] Solitaire is paired with Blue, and represented by a blueberry, contradicting the 'FROOT of the Month' campaign.
- This song replaced Can't Pin Me Down for select showings of the Neon Nature Tour through the dates of February 16-24, 2016.
