This article is about the multi-media project. To see alternate articles, check out the song with the same name.

The Archetypes is a multi-media project, consisting of a photoshoot, video series and Tumblr page created by Marina Diamandis for her sophomore album, Electra Heart.

There are four archetypes, as narrated by the song of the same name, they go: Housewife, Beauty Queen, Homewrecker, Idle Teen. Some of the archetypes have alternate names, however Marina has also mentioned a few alternate archetypes in interviews:

A lot of the visual side of things is based on female archetypes. So you have the suburban housewife, you have suburban youth, you have the homewrecker, you have pin-ups and stars and beauty queens. I am a bit of all of them. I suppose that's why I picked those specific archetypes because they resonate with me. - Electra Heart track-by-track[1]

I just noticed I was pinpointing these character types, like Bubblegum Bitch, Homewrecker, Primadonna. - FaceCulture[2]

She's a persona, a vehicle I'm using to explore American archetypes - the housewife, the beauty queen, the pin-up, the starlet. - BBC[3]

The Primadonna, the Teen Idle, the Homewrecker and the Suburban Housewife, the Stepford Wife. - MusicOMH[4]

I'm doing this exhibition called 'The Archetypes', which is about illusion and identity. Electra Heart is basically something that represents all female archetypes - the homewrecker, teen idol, teen runaway, suburban housewife, etc. I can't say much more now as it's too early to reveal it all. It should be out in around three months. - DigitalSpy[5]

In January 2012, Marina said she had done the photoshoot, referring to the shoot in October 2011, the album was focusing on character types and "focused on like 8 different people who I play", so she had to do it in advance as it was a big shoot.[6] She said later in June that she was pinpointing "character types".[7]

Earlier that month when Marina revealed The Archetypes on Twitter she said it was divided into four categories,[8] and even earlier, in October 2011, Marina said the first part of the campaign would focus on "suburbia and housewives",[9] suggesting that these four archetypes were more of an umbrella category, and each archetype has multiple "character types" within it, like Bubblegum Bitch being a Idle Teen song.

The Electra Heart Tumblr is where Marina uploaded, tagged and captioned the images she took for the project. Outtakes have leaked over the years but they can be 'assumed' to be part of a certain archetype as they are simply unused shots from the same look. To see all of the Tumblr images, in order sorted by archetype, click here. Or to see all of the posts on her blog in order, including some deleted ones, click here.

Note:
all of the captions Marina used on the Tumblr were styled ♡ L I K E T H I S ♡ Due to the difficulty this will cause screen readers, and people who have trouble reading this type of text, all captions have been re-written 'normally', though the words remain the same.

Background[]

The idea of basing the songs around "Electra Heart" and four archetypes originated from the time Marina spent travelling in the United States after the release of her debut album, The Family Jewels. She explained:[10]
Cindy Sherman-Marina

Untitled Film Stills / The Archetypes

I was starting to think about our Tumblr generation, and how photos appear on Tumblr and people become almost like mini-stars of the internet, and you don't know who the hell they are - they're just anonymous faces. So I started to take photos, and make an effort to look completely different in each one, in different hotels and apartments all across America when I was travelling. And it just started to build from that. It was more the prima donna archetype at the beginning, really; I was reading a lot of books like Hollywood Babylon, focusing more on the gossipy, suicidal side of the '30s and '40s in Hollywood. That's how it started, and then it grew into a real project.

The visuals were inspired by Cindy Sherman, who Marina referenced in The Archetypes, and the writings of Chuck Palahniuk and Dorothy Parker.[11] Discussing the visual side in an interview with MusicOMH:[12]

One of the key things about the whole Electra Heart project is the visuals and artwork, and there is a clear theme developed throughout all the imagery, a theme of faded glamour and stylised grandeur with Marina prominent throughout. It is her direction and influence that runs through all the imagery, she says.

I just took a lot of care with the visual side of things. I know what I want this time and I have a very specific idea of who I am as an artist and what I want to portray myself as.

There will be more videos to come that expand even further on the story of Electra Heart. The album is more of an all encompassing multi-media project than a mere 12 track pop record.

With the whole Archetypes project, I know a lot of people who hear my music won't find out about that, but I think it is really essential to the whole project and there are going to be more videos coming out in the future, just little home made ones. But that's what builds up the bulk of the message, and the whole vision.

Creation[]

Tumblr (02 Jun 2011) 1-001

♡ I BELIEVE IN ME ♡

Marina's Tumblr was created in December 2010 under "marinaandthefeminists",[13] intended for die Life, prior to it being scrapped in favour of Electra Heart. On an unknown date, the URL was changed to 'electraheart'.[14] The Electra Heart Tumblr's first post was on June 2, 2011, and originally featured other pictures rather than photographs of Electra Heart and the video series only.[15] It is unknown exactly when or why Marina deleted them, though it is speculated this was done during Summer of 2011 when she switched from all caps captions to the "iconic" version starting and ending with a heart symbol (♡), bolded in all caps with a space between each letter.

In August 2011, Marina stated in an interview with PopJustice:[16]

Basically Electra Heart is a story, I don't even know if it's going to take the form of an album yet, but it's a really cinematic '70s Americana-type film and each part of the story comes in Part One, Part Two, Part Three.

I think a lot of people will think Electra Heart is an alter ego or something but she's not, it's kind of basically a vehicle to portray part of the American dream, with elements of Greek tragedy and that's all going to be coming out through the visuals. It's hard to explain but I think you'll see it when it all comes together.

Marina wanted to do an exhibition for a gallery, with films she was working on for the album and photography collections.[17] Ultimately, this never occurred, as she stated the first part of the campaign would focus on suburbia and housewives. This was likely before Primadonna was written (sometime in October 2011,[18] though she had the song title in mind prior to this), and the creation of the track, which "picked itself as the first single off the album".[19] This altered her plans, as it was the next part after The Archetypes (song) to be released.

In January 2012, Marina stated she had shot the Electra Heart album artwork photoshoot, adding she had also recorded many of the videos,[20] which would have been Fear and Loathing, Radioactive, The Archetypes, Primadonna and Su-Barbie-A, though the latter two had yet to be released at the time.

Casper Balslev (25 Oct 2011) 3-001

♡ BUBBLEGUM BITCH ♡[21]

Marina officially announced The Archetypes in a series of tweets on January 8, 2012:[22][23][24][25]

Been building a project called "The Archetypes" since March 2011. I shot it myself across North America and Europe over 7 months.

And in Oct we did the final shoot. I knew the album cover the minute I saw it

'The Archetypes' is split into 4 categories: "Su-Barbie-A", "Teen Idles", "The Homewrecker" + "Stars & Queens"...

As a celebration of mixing this month, i'm gonna post the 1st official photo on Monday on http://electraheart.tumblr.com

Electra Heart[]

Marina described the titular character Electra Heart as "a vehicle I'm using to explore American archetypes"[26] and "not an alter-ego".[27] She explained in an press interview:[28]

Electra is not a real person or an imagined person, the album title represents a series of female character types, so this is personality types not a person. For example I have Homewrecker, the Primadonna, the Idle Teen, and the Housewife. At the moment all of the photography and the concept surrounding a depiction of, I suppose, questions about love and identity through these characters. They're just a foil for telling the story really. They're not really anyone, they're just me putting on different guises, different images, just how I wore different outfits, different styles for my last album. I'm doing the same this time, I'm just photographing them and putting them into a category.

Additionally stating:

I wanted to create this fictional character who was everything I was not, I wanted to be a strong, cold-hearted person. I feel like girls who are bitches always get the guy and never get hurt, 'cause that's what we think! I wanted to create a character that allowed me to be like that.[citation needed]

Electra Heart is the antithesis of everything that I stand for. And the point of introducing her and building a whole concept around her is that she stands for the corrupt side of American ideology, and basically that's the corruption of yourself. My worst fear - that's anyone's worst fear - is losing myself and becoming a vacuous person. And that happens a lot when you're very ambitious.[29]

On August 8, 2013, two years after the video premiere of Fear and Loathing, the character was symbolically "killed off" in the music video for the song Electra Heart, with Marina tweeting "Goodbye, Electra Heart!" the same day.[30]

In January 2015, The Guardian asked Marina regarding the death of Electra Heart:[31]

Oh [I killed her] with sleeping pills, of course. But I had to kill her, it was the end. It was really fun while it lasted but those things are only meant to last a certain amount of time.

Video Series[]

In August 2011, Marina stated each song would be granted a music video set in 70s America, an idea inspired by the parallels between Greek Mythology and Old Hollywood.[32] In a June 2012 interview, Diamandis revealed she envisioned 15 parts.[33] When asked about The Archetypes and Su-Barbie-A, she explained:[34]

If I'm honest I'm not really sure what they are, or why I do them. [laughs] But I do them and I like doing them, and they say something else that the record doesn't. So that's the aim of those clips. There will probably be like five of those, and fifteen parts in total. I don't know, I just really enjoy doing them. [What do they say that the album doesn't say?] Well I think they focus on the two themes a little bit more, which is identity, which is what the archetypes is focusing on. And I suppose explaining why I have an attraction to the visual side of the things and why it's really important.

Marina repeated there would be more "homemade" videos, as "that's what builds up the bulk of the message, and the whole vision, because sometimes I'm just crap at saying what I mean. So it's much easier for me to do it in the form of a photograph or a video". It can be assumed the unreleased other three mini-videos would be for the missing archetypes, Homewrecker, Idle Teen and Beauty Queen.[35] Video footage from the photoshoots made it into The Archetypes (song) and Su-Barbie-A, also appearing in E.V.O.L for a small amount of frames only. No footage representing Beauty Queen or Idle Teen was used, and 11 videos were ultimately released only.

Housewife[]

Housewife or suburban housewife, commonly referred to as Su-Barbie-A, after the title track, was inspired by the 1975 movie "The Stepford Wives" which Marina samples in Su-Barbie-A:

"If you're going to tell me you don't like this dress. I'm sticking my head right in the oven!"

In this particular scene, the protagonist, Joanna, is shocked to discover that her once Liberal friend, Bobby, has been replaced by a Stepford Wife, and now exhibits the same conservative and vapid behaviour as all the other women in the town. The Stepford Wives is based on a book following Joanna Eberhart, a photographer and young mother who suspects the submissive housewives in her new idyllic Connecticut neighbourhood may be robots created by their husbands.

The term "Stepford wife" entered common use in the English language after the publication of Levin's book and it is generally used as a supposed derogatory term which refers to a submissive and docile wife who seems to conform blindly to the stereotype of an old-fashioned subservient role in relationship to her husband. In addition, it is a woman who fits into a societal role of a suburban mother who is robotic and on anti-depressants*. She appears perfect, void of any negative emotions, and has a keen ability to fit in.

Valley of the Dolls (1967)

Valley of the Dolls (1967)

Casper Balslev (27 Oct 2011) 8-001 (B&W)

The Archetypes shoot (2011)

This is mirrored with the sample of "I Feel Fantastic" a robotic voice monotonously repeating "I feel fantastic, hey hey hey!" and the plot of "Valley of the Dolls".

Valley of the Dolls, a 1966 book, follows three women struggling to forge careers in the entertainment industry, each of them descending into barbiturate addiction - "dolls" being a slang term for depressant pills or "downers". They become fast friends, sharing the bonds of ambition and the tendency to fall in love with the wrong men. At the end of the book the main character finally admits to herself that her husband will never stop having affairs, and assures herself that she will eventually fall out of love and become numb to all of her pain before reaching for her "dolls" again.

Marina has specifically stated that the visuals were inspired by the 1967 film,[36] which is set in the mid-to-late 1960s, with the events unfolding over the course of a few years, unlike the book which begins in 1945 and develops throughout two decades.

In reference to her Tumblr selfie captioned, Suburbia: Dollywood, Marina said:

Tumblr (28 Sept 2011) 1-001

Suburbia: Dollywood

Casper Balslev (27 Oct 2011) 3-004

E.V.O.L Music Video

this is a parody of normality, I look like I'm about to murder someone - which is at odds with the housewife pose. It's very embedded in American culture, that image of the 1950s housewife, where everything was perfect. It's portrayed as a real boom time, that generation. But I want to know the truth… What is the truth of that woman's life? A lot of women were looking out with resentment and thinking, 'Why can't I work?' and, 'Why do I have to stay at home?' Suburbia seems very polished, but underneath you never know what's going on. I like the dark things. The underside.[37]

This original pose was mirrored in a short clip Marina shot and put into EVOL's music video, along with her looking upset, with a suitcase walking alongside the road.

Su-Barbie-A is the only song without a single (or free download) attached to it, although it is the only one to have it's own "home video" dedicated to the archetype, and was the second archetype to appear on the Tumblr.

Beauty Queen[]

Beauty Queen or Stars & Queens,[40] commonly referred too as (the) Primadonna after the title track, was inspired by a comment made by Marina's boyfriend at the time.

Marina describes the Primadonna as a song for girls or women who are trying to validate themselves without validation from others. In an interview with Elle Girl:

It's about not needing anybody when it comes to love—your raison d'etre is to live for adoration. Girls usually feel like this when they are not appreciated in a relationship. The inspiration for the song came from an ex-boyfriend. He thought it was funny that I was a mega drama queen always talking 'global love' this, 'global love' that! He called me a prima donna. I love it but I also kind of hate it. Like they say, 'You only hate in others what you hate in yourself', so I thought I'd channel this well-known but kind of undesirable character type into a pop song. As the saying goes (that I just made up): You've either been one or dated one at least once in your life.[41]

♡ ELECTRA HEART ♡

Marina additionally called Primadonna (along with Teen Idle) an "undesirable character type."[42]

Primadonna, suitably, is the lead single and the only archetype with a full music accompanying it, and the album cover of Electra Heart.[43] It was the first post on the Electra Heart Tumblr,[44] and the instrumental of The State of Dreaming, a Primadonna track, was used in The Archetypes (song). Additionally, there is a possibility that the archetype would have also got one of the missing three "home videos" in the style of The Archetypes (song) and Su-Barbie-A. Like the Teen Idle, no filmed footage from the Primadonna photoshoots were ever used.

Homewrecker[]

Homewrecker was inspired by the idea of playing "the slayer instead of the slain."[47]

A Homewrecker is a person (normally female, although sometimes male) who ruins an established family by putting forward romantic or sexual interest into a married family member with little or no remorse for their actions. The term "Homewrecker" simply means "a person who ruins a home", or a person who destroys a family for their own personal pleasure.

Idle Teen[]

Idle Teen or Teen Idol, commonly referred to as Teen Idle, after the title track, was inspired by a jumper Marina saw at London Fashion Week in February 2011.[51]

Casper Balslev (02 Jul 2012) 9-001 (B&W)

Marina in the 'Teen Idle' jumper

Thinking it would be funny to rhyme "idle" with "suicidal," she decided to write the song about youth—specifically how she did not live out her teen years the way she wished she had.[52] She called Teen Idle (along with Primadonna) an "undesirable character type."[53]

Teen Idle has one single, and along with the Homewrecker it has no music video in the series attached to it's title track. It possibly would have got one of the missing three "home videos" in the style of The Archetypes (song) and Su-Barbie-A. Like the Primadonna, no filmed footage from the Teen Idle photoshoots were ever used. None of the Teen Idle pictures from the original shoot have the signature heart on the left cheek, perhaps suggesting that she has not 'become' Electra Heart yet.
