The Lonely Hearts Club Tour is the second concert tour by Marina Diamandis in support of her second studio album, Electra Heart. The tour ran concurrent with Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto Tour for which Marina was one of the opening acts.

Background[]

In 2012, the UK dates were announced on Valentine's Day with the North American dates announced in April. On April 30, it was announced that the UK segment of the tour had to be rescheduled, as Marina sustained vocal chord damage.[1]

On July 10, Marina announced under her shows tab on her website new dates for the UK beginning 30 September in Leeds and running till October 17 where it will finish in Dublin, Ireland.[citation needed]

Whilst in Poland, Marina said she was "rehearsing some new songs for the LHC Tour".[citation needed]

In December, Marina revealed she was working on a fan film called "HEARTCORE" (sometimes stylised as "HEARTC♡RE"), which would document the tour across the USA.[2] This never came to fruition, for unknown reasons.

On January 28, 2013, Marina announced via Twitter that the tour was returning to North America.[3]And that her "fave Bubblegum Bitch" Charli XCX would be supporting her on tour.[4] On February 11, Marina announced via her website and e-mail, that her European tour was to be cancelled.[5]

On March 12, Marina posted a preview video of HEARTCORE.[6]

On May 2, the last leg of the tour opened in America,[7] on the 4th Marina debuted the track Electra Heart, as an interlude.[citation needed]

Marina tweeted on the final day of the tour:[8]

This tour was a dream come true for me. A real highlight in my life. Thank you- x

Stage[]

In 2012, Marina told Interview Magazine:[9]

I am so excited! It's gonna go into a completely different world. Physically, I think it's going to be more like theater. The stage will be like a scene—I want a living room setting: a chaise lounge, a flickering, old, disgusting motel TV, a hat stand with various clothing I can switch into with each song. For me, it's like about being able to be resourceful and adapt to each venue. If I'm in a 500-capacity or 5000, it's going to be the same. But I like the idea of turning it into a play as opposed to a "music show"—it's not like, jazz-hands theatricality. You become involved with the character.

Marina said on Twitter that the second European leg of the tour will "have a touch of Electra's divorce" and that the colour scheme to the tour will be "bubblegum black and baby pink".[citation needed]

Costumes[]

Unlike The Family Jewels Tour, Marina said the emphasis would not be on costume changes, but on the set and stage designs.[10] She expanded on this in an interview with Vice:[11]

Throughout this tour I’ve had the same look. I actually got a Welsh guy to make everything for me at the beginning and it hasn’t changed much since. [Do you have a lot of say in that?] Yeah totally. I do these crap sketches for him and say, “I want a pink trim on that,” or whatever. With this album, I knew I wanted a consistent image for the whole tour, to have this one look. [What is that one look?] It’s like, cyborg beauty queen. At least it was until I had dark hair. Now it doesn’t feel quite right. [..] The fashion is very pink-tastic still, it’s like a cynical Britney Spears.

The clothes you wear make you feel a certain way, and with Electra Heart, it only feels right performing those songs if you have a bridal veil on or something, so you play up to the character even more. Those clothes really set the scene. If I had to go on stage in leggings and a t-shirt it would feel really weird.

Cancelled Performances[]

In October 2012, Marina announced her comeback to Europe the following year.[17]

In December, the tour dates were rescheduled for April 2013.[18] Marina explained: "For logistical reasons, it was not going to be possible to bring my full production to all of the venues on the January tour. I want all of my fans to be able to experience the full show production, so by moving the dates back to April, I will be able to tour the full "Lonely Hearts Club" production to every venue. I really hope I don't inconvenience anybody too much and that you will be able to make the rescheduled dates! I want to make every single show I do as incredible as possible for my fans."

The third European leg was ultimately cancelled in February 2013. Marina wrote on her website[19]: "Dear Diamonds, News-Bummer-alert. Unfortunately I have had to cancel the April European 'Lonely Hearts Club' tour. We have tried everything (and I mean absolutely everything) to make these dates feasible but it has proven to be logistically impossible given the current routing and tour production. To say I am frustrated and disappointed is an absolute understatement. For whatever reason, this European tour was not meant to be and in hindsight, I probably should have cancelled it instead of postponing it but I just really wanted to make it work. A blog from me won't make things much better but I feel so sad that I won't get to see you all and this is the only way I have of telling you in a personal(ish) way. Apologies if I have caused any disruption or inconvenience to anybody's schedule. All tickets will be refunded. Til next time."
