True is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her current stage name 'MARINA'. Appearing on her fourth studio album, LOVE + FEAR, it is the 6th track on the album. An acoustic version was released on LOVE + FEAR (Acoustic).
The song was written by Marina and Noonie Bao, Oscar Görres and Oscar Holter, and produced by Görres.
True is a 'LOVE' track.
Background[]
In May 2018 the song was written in Sweden,[1] along with Orange Trees, Believe in Love and Enjoy Your Life, at this point however, she thought the album was already done.[2]
On April 4, 2019, True was released digitally with the other LOVE tracks. Marina explained why on social media:[3]
❝ I created "LOVE + FEAR" as 2 separate records to be listened to individually. I'm releasing "LOVE" today so you can listen to it in full before we move onto "FEAR". Enjoy it here! ❞
Additionally sharing a quote from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross:[4]
❝ "There are only two emotions: Love and Fear. All positive emotions come from love, all negative emotions from fear. We cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They're opposites" - Elisabeth Kübler-Ross ❞
However, on the 26th, when LOVE + FEAR was released in full, the "LOVE" portion was no longer available to stream separately. At an unknown date, it was made available to stream again.[5]
On September 13, an acoustic version was released on LOVE + FEAR's acoustic EP, with a music video premiering on the 16th.
Meaning[]
Marina said:[6]
❝ [True] is about being true to your own nature. I always imagine being in a club with my friends singing it for some reason, I don't know why. ❞

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Everybody tells us what to do, do, do
Think they always know what’s good for you, you, you
We know they don’t really have a clue, clue, clue
Ooh, ooh, ooh
People like to tell you what to think, think, think
Sometimes it feels right to do the wrong, wrong thing
Let it go and listen to your own instincts
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause you don’t need nobody else
When you are true, true to yourself
You’re skin and bone, you’re full of fear
But you are just a human being (No matter what they do)
[Chorus]
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
[Verse 2]
Don’t need to add nothing on your skin, skin, skin
Be happy with the body that you’re in, in, in
Bein' who you are don’t cost a thing, thing, thing
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause you don’t need nobody else
When you are true, true to yourself
You’re skin and bone, you’re full of fear
But you are just a human being
No matter what they do
[Chorus]
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
[Bridge]
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
(No matter what they do)
[Chorus]
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
Always said we’re gonna be true
We will never change, we will never change
They could never do it better
Than when we are, are together
[Outro]
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
