True Colours is a cover song by Marina Diamandis, originally by Cyndi Lauper.

Background[]

The original file of True Colours gives a date of 2014 in the album "WMG Covers", and may have been produced in the same sessions as Happy and I'm a Ruin's acoustic versions.

It has been speculated to have been part of Marina's 2014 World AIDS Day campaign, in which she wrote an article for Marie Claire,[1] and was photographed by David Locke for the campaign "Put a Ribbon on It". True Colours has more commonly been speculated to be part of FROOT's scrapped repackage, however this is unlikely.

The demo version, which features slightly different instrumentation, leaked on January 4, 2016. The final version was officially released on Marina's YouTube channel a day later in response, with the caption:[2] "I recorded a cover of a @CyndiLauper song. Here it is."

Cyndi Lauper reposted the link and captioned it:[3] "Wow! Such a beautiful cover of 'True Colors' by the talented Marina and the Diamonds."

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Though, I realise it's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you makes you feel so small

[Chorus]
But I see your true colours shining through
I see your true colours and that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colours, true colours are beautiful

[Verse 2]
Show me a smile then, don't be unhappy
Can't remember when I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
You call me up 'cause you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colours shining through
I see your true colours and that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colours are beautiful
